The United Kingdom-Malaysia University Consortium (UK-MUC) recently concluded its five-day conference at Universiti Malaya from 17th - 21st July 2023. The event provided a dynamic platform for students from Malaysia and the UK to engage in insightful talks, interactive activities, and cross-cultural exchanges, all centred around the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations. Among the participants were Nurul Syafiah Binti Mohd Aliman and Mohd Danial Wazien Bin Mohd Zamain, final year students pursuing a Bachelor of Marketing at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM).
The conference's activities included engaging sessions highlighting the significance of global cooperation and sustainability. One of the standout activities was the "UNESCO: Global Culture (Buddy Scheme)" poster presentation, which used music, dance, and food to celebrate the unique cultures of Malaysia and the UK. This initiative fostered a deeper understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity among participants.
Prior to the conference, the students participated in a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) project that started in May 2023. The COIL SDG challenge encouraged students to apply their academic knowledge to propose innovative solutions for pressing global issues aligned with specific SDGs. This challenge provided a platform for students to think critically, collaborate, and contribute meaningfully to global problem-solving. Nurul Syafiah and Mohd Danial had the opportunity to channel their academic knowledge into innovative solutions for pressing global challenges aligned with specific SDGs. This challenge honed their critical thinking, collaborative skills, and ability to contribute effectively to the global community.
The conference also focused on holistic well-being, with a Tai Chi workshop that set a serene tone and a mindfulness talk by Dr Visha that emphasized self-awareness and multiculturalism. These sessions highlighted the importance of mental and emotional well-being in the context of sustainable development.
The event's cultural program showcased the vibrancy of both Malaysian and British traditions. Participants learned traditional dances like Zapin and Joget, explored artistic expressions through batik painting and Chinese calligraphy, and gained insights into cultural heritage. These experiences emphasized the power of art and dance to bridge cultures and create lasting connections.
The conference included visits to the UM Mini Farm and the British Council office. The UM Mini Farm provided a hands-on learning opportunity for attendees to interact with animals and understand sustainable farming practices. The visit to the British Council showcased educational opportunities and cultural exchange programs, inspiring attendees to seek international learning experiences. On the other hand, the conference's multicultural dialogue brought students from diverse backgrounds to exchange ideas and form lasting friendships.
In conclusion, the UKMUC Conference 2023 provided a transformative experience for Nurul Syafiah and Mohd Danial Wazien, who represented UUM. The event's emphasis on cross-cultural understanding, holistic well-being, and innovative problem-solving underscored the importance of collaboration in achieving the SDGs.
