THE SPIRIT OF ASEAN COOPERATION IS EVIDENT IN THE 17TH IMT-GT VARSITY CARNIVAL
UUM ONLINE: August 24 - Coinciding with its apt theme "Unity in Diversity," the 17th IMT-GT Varsity Carnival drew to a close last night as proof that the spirit of unity was seen reflected in various activities showcased although restricted by the differences in culture, religion and background.
Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), the host for the 17th IMT-GT Varsity Carnival managed to unite university students from The Indonesia–Malaysia–Thailand Growth Triangle through the various collaborative activities in Sports, Cultural and Academic Seminar.
Bukit Kayu Hitam Assemblyman, Dato’ Ahmad Zaini Japar said that the relations among the countries involved can be strengthened through joint activities carried out during the carnival.
"Healthy competition through sports activities and the sharing of ideas during academic seminars show tolerance towards each other. I am confident that the spirit of unity that resulted from the carnival will not just end here and will be taken home by each of the participants to their respective countries.
Friendships created during the carnival are priceless and should be cherished, "he said in his speech at the closing ceremony of the 17th IMT-GT Varsity Carnival at the Mu'adzam Shah Hall last night.
Dato’ Ahmad Zaini also presented Certificates and the Best Practice Awards (Cultural Activities) to the participants involved.
The colourful closing ceremony started with the renditions of the national anthems of Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand and followed by impressive cultural performances presented by participants from the 12 participating universities.
Meanwhile, UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dato' Wira Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak said that participants who were involved in the carnival are ‘role model’ for the other ASEAN youths out there as they demonstrated unity through sports, cultural activities and academic seminars.
"I wish to congratulate all the participants who took part in the various events with the utmost determination and respect, sharing and learning from each other, of course you all are the future of ASEAN!"
He also expressed his appreciation and gratitude to all parties involved in ensuring the success of the carnival. His appreciation and gratitude were also extended to the 119 UUM volunteers who contributed their energy and service to ensure the smooth flow of the carnival.
The President of the IMT-GT Varsity Council, Prof. Dato' Dr. Adnan Hussein said the annually organised IMT-GT Varsity Carnival indeed achieved its objectives in developing a consensus towards creating the ASEAN Community.
In addition, attendees to the closing ceremony also witnessed the handing over of flags to the host of the 18th IMT-GT Varsity Carnival, the Rajamangala University of Techology Sri Vijaya (RMUTSV), Songkhla, Thailand.
Earlier in the evening a tea reception was held in honour of the acquaintances of the IMT-GT to further strengthen the relationship amongst the member countries. The Tea Reception was hosted by the former President of the IMT-GT Varsity Council who is also the USM Vice-Chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Omar Osman at the EDC-UUM.
Also present at the 17th IMT-GT Varsity Carnival closing ceremony were USM Vice-Chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Omar Osman; UUM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdul Malek Abdul Karim and IMT-GT officials.
The ceremony concluded with a joint cultural performance put up by all participants on the stage.
